Empowering Cassia Farming Communities

Back to case studies

Project

Northern Vietnam

From 2024–2025, an investment of USD 211,000 was allocated supporting the responsible sourcing initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of more than 160 cassia farmers in Northern Vietnam. The program focuses on strengthening sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing market access, and supporting farmers on their journey toward certification under the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), helping create long-term economic opportunities for farming communities.

How we helped

Investment in a multi-year responsible-sourcing program strengthened farmer capability, certification of readiness, and access to markets. Training in plant health, harvesting, post-harvest handling, heavy-metal compliance, UEBT requirements, water treatment and gender equality is helping growers meet international expectations while creating greater value at origin. In 2025, the project engaged 158 farmers cultivating cassia across 315 hectares, with 142 farmers achieving UEBT certification and producing 339 metric tons of certified cassia material. These achievements are significant toward building a more transparent, ethical, and sustainable supply chain while creating greater value for farming communities.
